AFLF to Investigate Freedmen Impact in Google’s $28 Million Discrimination Settlement

The American Freedmen Legal Fund acknowledges the recent $28 million settlement by Google over claims that the company favored White and Asian employees over other minority groups, excluding Black employees from the settlement class.

While the settlement addresses some racial disparities, the exclusion of Black employees raises serious concerns, especially given historical and ongoing discrimination within the tech industry. With the American Freedmen Legal Fund’s mission being focused on the rights of Freedmen, we emphasize that Freedmen is a race-neutral designation and encompasses individuals who can trace their lineage to those formerly enslaved in the United States.

As a result, the American Freedmen Legal Fund will be investigating whether any Freedmen were impacted by these discriminatory hiring and promotion practices. If evidence supports that Freedmen employees at Google were subjected to pay disparities, career stagnation, or discriminatory practices, we will explore legal remedies and potential litigation strategies to ensure fair treatment and just compensation.

Additionally, we are closely monitoring the impact of President Donald Trump’s recent executive order dismantling the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), which previously played a critical role in investigating pay disparities at companies like Google. This shift in federal oversight places a greater burden on private legal efforts and advocacy groups to hold corporations accountable.

We urge any Freedmen who worked at Google and believe they were impacted by discriminatory employment practices to contact the American Freedmen Legal Fund for further investigation and potential legal action.

Our commitment remains steadfast: ensuring Freedmen receive equal economic opportunities, challenging corporate discrimination, and safeguarding labor rights within the tech industry and beyond.
